Trauma and the Organization

Talk by Marc Maltz, MBA consultant, clinician for major corporations and start-ups alike, and co-author of the seminar work on Organizational Resilience.
Marc Maltz, MBA, RODP with over thirty years of business experience as an organizational consultant has helped, CEO’s, Presidents, Boards, and senior officers develop and transform their organizations, managing risk, improving productivity and execution, expanding markets, and achieving new strategies.
Since September 11, 2001, Marc has focused on developing healthy, “resilient” organizations. Working with an investment bank that was headquartered in the World Trade Center, Marc and a team of consultant’s and clinicians, helped guide this firm to achieve remarkable results; overcoming the loss of one-third of the firm, including partners and some founders, to quickly become more profitable than ever as leaders in their markets.
Utilizing the learning from this tragedy and remarkable recovery, Marc has developed a practice in the emergent field of organizational resilience. Whether an organization has experienced a trauma or less dramatic shifts in markets or business conditions, “resilience” is a critical concept for managing in an increasingly complex world.

His work on resilience includes:
“Organizational Resilience: how organizations can endure and prosper through trauma and normalcy”, Mount Sinai Hospital Department of Psychiatry, January 2007;
“The Power of Moral Purpose: Sandler O’Neill & Partners in the Aftermath of September 11, 2001” with Steve Freeman and Larry Hirschhorn, in the Organization Development Journal, Winter 2004; and “Consulting to Trauma: Sandler O’Neil in the aftermath of 9/11”, in On the Ground after September 11: Mental Health Responses and Practical Knowledge Gained, 2005. The research he and his colleagues conducted after September 11 won the National Academy of Management’s Best Paper/Best Research in 2003.
Marc has also published works on succession planning, performance management, the use of emotional intelligence in leadership development, managing resistance to change, and the use of dreams and dream intelligence in organizations.??
Marc has an M.B.A., an M.A. in History, and holds postgraduate certificates from MIT and the Wharton School. He is a former Co-director and a current faculty member of the William Alanson White Institute for Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis and Psychology's Organization Program and visiting faculty for Columbia University Teacher's College Organization Psychology Program. He holds certifications in Difficult Conversations the Hay Group’s Emotional Competence Inventory and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Marc is a Registered Organizational Development Professional, and a member of the A.K. Rice Institute, the American Society for Training and Development, the Society for Human Resource Management, and the International Society for the Psychoanalytic Study of Organizations.
